"The Story of the West Chamber is a representative work by the famous Yuan dynasty playwright Wang Shifu. It tells the love story of the scholar Zhang Sheng and the daughter of the Prime Minister, Cui Yingying, who, with the help of the maid Hongniang, overcome numerous obstacles and eventually marry.
In the 49th year of the Kangxi reign (1710), a version called Manchu-Han West Chamber appeared. This is a bilingual version in Manchu and Chinese, but the name of the translator is not indicated.
The book translates the 16 chapters of dialogue and lyrics from the original into Manchu, while the commentaries and the last four chapters are not translated. The translation is fluent and lively, showcasing the translator’s deep understanding of both Manchu and Chinese languages."
